Re-Roof Permits and Roofer Registration in Amarillo

Any roofing job over one square (100 sq ft) needs a permit in Amarillo. The city says all roofing projects require permits, with one exception: repairs of one square (100 sq ft) or less don't require a permit, while anything over one square requires a permit and compliance with the code. Once issued, the roofing permit number must be displayed and clearly visible from the street.

In Amarillo, no one in the business of roofing may work on a roof that needs a permit inside city limits until registered, and a contractor has to deliver the surety bond or insurance certificate before a permit is issued. A full tear-off, drip edge on shingle roofs, replaced vents and flashings, chimney crickets where needed and approved exhaust vent terminations:

• Tear-off. New roof coverings can't be installed without removing existing layers, except for complete and separate metal roofing systems.
• Drip edge. Mandatory on all asphalt shingle roofs.
• Vents and flashings. Damaged or deteriorated ones must be replaced.
• Chimney crickets. Required for chimneys wider than 30 inches.
• Exhaust vents. Specific termination rules, including dampers and approved caps.

At least one square foot of ventilation for every 150 square feet of attic, so an 1,800 sq ft attic needs 12 square feet; with equal ventilation at the soffits and near the top of the roof, the requirement can drop to 1/300 of the attic area. The city also gives a shortcut for balanced systems: at least one static roof vent per three squares of roofing installed, with one turbine counting as 6 static vents. It also says Texas Pattern roof vents aren't approved in Amarillo unless specifically approved in writing.

Because Amarillo's final inspection checks for a carbon monoxide alarm. The city requires CO alarms in single-family homes with an attached garage or fuel gas appliances, with at least one at each sleeping area outside the bedrooms, and says a CO alarm has to be installed to pass the final inspection. The city notes local suppliers sell them starting around $20.00.
